Ultrasone DJ1 S-Logic Surround Sound Professional Headphones CustomerReview
I own the Ultrasone DJ1 PRO model. It is the same headphone as the regular DJ1 except the PRO model comes with in-built “MU metal bufferboard” that greatly reduces magnetic radiation and the PRO model also comes with extra cords and speed-switch ear pads. The actual speaker is the same as far as I know.
Having said that, these are one of the best sounding headphones in the sub-00 range. Especially, if you narrow it down to the DJ market, then these are quite possibly the best DJ headphones currently available as far as sound quality goes.
What makes them so great?
PROS:
1) Well, for starters, Ultrasone’s patented “S-Logic” technology enables this headphone to produce natural surround sound because the speaker is not firing directly into your ear canal like almost every other headphone in the market. Ultrasone engineers have designed the speaker to disperse sound to the outer grooves of your ear (the “pinna”). This creates a natural, real-world listening experience. Your brian automatically perceives this sound with a bit more spatial detail. Furthermore, this technology allows you to get the same loudness sensation at about 40% lower dB output than other headphones. So, that’s good news for your hearing health.
Of course, the marketing guys will make it sound like these headphones make you feel like you are at the concert. No, they won’t. I don’t think any enclosed headphone currently can. But, they will get you pretty darn close. A part on the reason is that most current music is not being produced and recorded in a surround sound environment. So, these headphones will shine when used to enjoy a DVD that is encoded in surround sound. One of the best features on the DJ1 headphone is that it has excellent frequency seperation. All the various different sounds are nicely seperated, almost to a fault because listeners who enjoy their sound a bit more agressive will find the sound quality annoyingly sterile.
2) Ultrasone’s patented ULE (Ultra Low Emission) technology is the second feature that makes this headphone different than any other headphone on the market. ULE works by implementing something called “MU Metal” to effectively block around 98% of headphone magnetic radiation that would otherwise disperse to your body. Radiation induced from electronics (such as cell phones and headphones) is still a very undeveloped topic of study. Some researchers are really worried that the combined radiation of all these electronics in our daily life will eventually have very adverse effects on our health. So, this headphone seems to be much ahead of its time in that aspect.
So, are there any bad things about this headphone?
CONS:
1) Almost all DJ/HiFi/Professional headphones are plagued by big, lanky dimensions. The Ultrasone DJ1 headphones are no exception. The highly mobile and fashionalbe lifestyle of today has no room for the “BIG CANS”. My old headphones were the Technis RP-DJ1200. I’ve owned them for about 5 years and the only reason I even considered buying the Ultrasones is because someone stepped on my old Technics. Mechanically and cosmetically, they were in excellent condition. Granted, they are not as clean sounding as the Ultrasones, but I love them to this day for the sheer fact that they have the perfect size earcup and they have an aggressive bass response. No other professional-quality DJ headphone has an earcup that is that small, yet it covers your entire ear. They also sound pretty good.
So, the Ultrasones lose in that catagory because they have huge earcups that make them lanky, and it also makes them more prone to breakage at the earcup hinges. The big size also makes it difficult to carry them around or put them in the pocket of your DJ bag.
2) As I’ve said, the DJ1 has superb sound quality because they are relatively “flat” or “linear”, but the sound quality is so sterlie that the aggressiveness of the low-end is lacking. I believe that a product geared towards DJs and everyday-consumers should have a strong bass response. Yet, I don’t want Ultrasone to make changes at the cost of sound quality. So, my suggestion to Ultrasone is to rework the acoustics of the speaker or to integrate a little “bass boost” switch in one of the extra cords they provide. I think integrating a little switch would be the best option.
So, to cap it off, an option of having a stronger bass response, and a smaller size earcup would make this headphone absolutely perfect for DJs and consumers. Don’t confuse these things to be complaints, though. They are just improvements I hope to see in the future.
Overall, the Ultrasone DJ1 is one of the best sounding headphones in the market. You just can’t find a better sounding option in their price range. If you are on a budget, but top-notch sound quality is you number one priority, then go for the DJ1 model or any other Ultrasone model from the PROline or the HiFi line of headphones.
OUTSTANDING!!! – Mikey – Boogie Down Bronx
These by far are the best headphones out there. You will be impressed with the sound, the fit and the price. I’m not a DJ or someone in the music industry, I’m simply a person with an ipod and an ear for quality sound. I got a pair for my birthday last year from my wife. About 10 months later, I made the mistake of leaving them around my 6yrs old son who loves to pull on things.
Now that my birthday is here again, I’ve decided to get myself another pair. Trust me, once you listen to your music with these, ALL other headphones just doesn’t cut it. They’re perfect for DVD’s, Ipods and devices that support Surround Sound.
My next pair WILL BE the HFI 780, I consider those to be the ‘upgrade’.
Great DJ headphones – David Tilchin – Portland, OR
After deciding to finally put down my pair of disintegrating Pioneer HDJ-1000s, I choose these on a whim. I’m very happy with them! The construction is solid, although it is plastic. They are not as flexible as some headphones of this type you may be used to, but they the joints definitely have enough range for DJ use. Sound wise, they are clear and clean, with a heavy bias towards low end. All this extra bass is in my opinion worse for listening around the home, office, or whatever, but it’s pretty useful for a club environment – you can actually hear the low end over the subs you’re probably right next to. Which brings me to my favorite part of these headphones – the excellent sound isolation. When the cup is pressed to your ear, it forms a great seal, cutting out a significant amount of outside noise. This means that you don’t have to crank the volume way up to be able to hear what you’re doing, and in doing so put extra stress on your ears.
I would absolutely recommend these to any DJ.
You won’t be disappointed – Altair – USA
I was a little skeptical of these headphones when I first looked at them but after reading sparkling reviews of them on a few audio sites I decided to give them a try. They came with a CD that had some sample songs on it, apparently to “test drive” the headphones with. I plugged them in, popped in the CD and took them off almost immediately I was so surprised.
It’s a little disconcerting the first time you hear them, you’d swear the artist is performing in the very room you’re in until you take them off. Every set of headphones I’ve listened to, including my friends’ Bose Quietcomfort 2′s and Sennheiser HD280 Pros, still sound like you’re listening to headphones. By that I mean the music is coming from right next to your head and you can tell by the sound of it. With these it’s closer to being in a room with a high quality surround setup, it’s not perfect but it’s amazingly good.
The sound quality of these is nothing short of stellar, I listened to most of the Ultrasone sample CD (not really my style of music but it still sounded amazing) then figured that they probably included the CD just to make you go “Wow!” and that they would sound more like everyday headphones with regular music. After going through various MP3′s in my collection and even trying them with Pandora streaming radio they still impress.
The highs are perfect, everything is clear and sounds natural without overpowering the rest of the music. Without adjusting any EQ’s on my media player the sound is very accurate and perfectly balanced. The bass is once again very tight and accurate without obstructing the rest of the music. That being said I like a little extra bass sometimes, turn up the bass on your EQ and you won’t be disappointed. I’m not an audiophile and I don’t have a degree in audio engineering but I love music. If I’m near anything that can play back songs I’m listening to music, I’ve never heard it sound better than with these Ultrasone’s
